OpenAI is developing Workspace Agents — agents designed to perform repeatable workflows, use tools and work inside a shared workspace.
From chat to agent
Instead of reopening the same chat and re-explaining the same context, an agent can be configured with a clear role, persistent instructions, tools and permissions, information sources and an output format.
One agent can handle documents, another can check email, a third can prepare a weekly report and a fourth can work on code or testing.
The hard part
The challenge is not simply creating more agents. Teams must decide which agent is allowed to perform each task, who approves sensitive actions, what information it can access and how conflicting outputs are handled.
The direction
The possible progression is chat to agent, then to a team of agents and eventually to a workspace with context, permissions and control. This is not only about what AI knows, but about operational responsibility.
