Three recent updates show how AI competition is changing: models are becoming more specialized, training-data provenance is becoming strategic, and video generation is moving closer to ordinary work documents.
1. OpenAI introduces GPT-5.6
OpenAI describes GPT-5.6 as a family of three models: Sol for the most demanding tasks, Terra as a balanced option, and Luna as a faster and more affordable model. The company highlights gains in coding, long-horizon agentic work, browsing, and computer use.
2. ByteDance rejects distillation of rival models
Reuters, citing China’s The Paper, reports that ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming told the team not to improve its models through distillation of competitors’ systems, even if that means falling behind temporarily.
This is a company strategy, not a general industry ban. But it shows that model provenance and the legal status of training data are becoming part of competitive positioning.
3. Alibaba opens Wan 3.0 public beta
Alibaba Cloud has introduced video generation of up to 30 seconds. Published materials say Wan 3.0 can work with documents, spreadsheets and presentations in addition to text, images, audio and video. Listed pricing starts at $0.05 per second at 480p.
My take
The competition is no longer only about producing a better answer. It is about reasoning efficiency, technological independence, and turning real company data into a finished result.
